The Artist: Simon Hemsley's art is an expression of his striving for simplicity in his life. It is often what is left out that gives the works their spontaneity. Keeping subject matter as simple as possible is crucial. Leaving out what is, and filling in what isn't and allowing mistakes to happen adds an excitement to his art works. In addition, getting a balance between Abstraction and Realism will sometimes determine success or failure. However sometimes the more unbalanced and doubtful, the more appealing and exciting the images become. Being prepared to risk failure and be comfortable with distortion and risk, allows your work to progress. Drawing skills are fundamental to good art works both realist and abstract. Simon has spent years drawing on a regular basis to maintain his drawing skills.
